The Exiled: Of Shade and Shadow

Published December 2020.

Written by Niamh Schmid and Rebecca Schmid

The Great War is won… so everyone tells her. But even with her brother now king, Astra Verzaer knows the fight is far from over. When her sudden exile finds her alone in the dreary country of Merimeethia with only the aloof Prince Louko for company, she digs deeper in vain attempts to find proof of her suspicions. Yet Astra is not the only one with secrets, and she soon finds herself swallowed up in a sudden uproar over Merimeethia's throne—an uproar which she believes to be caused by the very person she set out to find. But will anybody believe her? Even if they do, will it be too late?

Technically, I met Niamh and Rebecca Schmid after they sent Of Shade and Shadow to the printer. I did a retroactive copy edit for new printings and the eBook. I had to include the first book in their series though because I am absolutely in love with the characters and world they’re building in their books. You don’t have to start with this one, necessarily, but I highly recommend it. Both Astra and Louko become such endearing characters through this book, enhanced by a strong supporting cast and rich worldbuilding that’s woven seamlessly into the narrative.

The technical sequel in the series is To Take a World: The GhostMaker, which takes readers to a whole new world but with equally charming cast of characters.

To continue with Astra and Louko’s adventures, readers can jump to The Exiled: A Game of Wits.

Available in paperback and eBook at Amazon CA.
